About Us

Igbo Community London

Who we are

Igbo community London (ICL) is a vibrant social and cultural association of people of Igbo extraction either by birth, marriage or association living within and outside London whose common object is to pass on our rich cultural heritage to our generation-next while building a thriving community of our people in the diaspora.
Igbos are the dominant ethnic group or tribe found in the Southeastern part of Nigeria (Ala-igbo) to be precise, a civilization dating back centuries before the arrival of the white man.
Today Igbos are found everywhere in the world thriving in education and business and contributing positively to the growth of their host nations, a testament of our nomadic and entrepreneurship spirit as individuals.

Iwa Oji

Breaking of The Kolanut

Ọjị occupies a unique position in the cultural life of Igbo people. “He who brings Kola brings Life”,Ọjị is the first thing served to any visitor in an Igbo home. Ọjị is served before an important function begins, be it marriage ceremony, settlement of family disputes or entering into any type of agreement. Ọjị is traditionally broken into pieces by hand, and if the Kola nut breaks into 3 pieces a special celebration is arranged.

Iri ji

New Yam Festival

A celebration of thanks and gratitude for a good harvest, this celebration is performed annually to secure a good harvest of the staple crop, significantly the new yam is shared and celebrated.

Our Motto (Obinwanne)

Obinwanne epitomizes our hunger, desire and collective struggle to harness our potential and foster progress and growth within our community and beyound.
Where the need arises, we are not afraid to express our division or disagreement within remits of our Igbo cultural values and respect of our ICL ranks and one another. At the end we stand by our love for one another which supersedes all; A brotherhood and supreme heritage of who we are as Igbo’s which is why Obinwanne stands as a knight to guide and guard.

Our Values

ICL’s core value are no different from our shared value systems as Igbos with emphasis on our rich cultural heritage, communal development, family and respect for elders and life even though these values are in constant confrontation with the western influences of our host countries and neighbors they nevertheless do not deter or change us or what we stand for.
